One of the most common concerns I hear from patients—whether they’re parents exploring care for their child or adults considering treatment for themselves—is simple: “What does the process actually look like?”
Orthodontic treatment can feel like a big commitment if you don’t know what to expect. My goal is always to make things as clear, efficient, and comfortable as possible from day one. So let me walk you through exactly how the process works at Rise + Smile Orthodontics, from your first visit to your regular appointments—and everything in between.
Your First Visit: More Than Just a Consultation
Your orthodontic journey starts with a comprehensive consultation. If you’d like a deeper dive into this experience, I’ve written more in Your First Visit: What to Expect.
When you walk into our South Austin office, you won’t feel like just another patient on the schedule. Our treatment coordinator will greet you, get to know your concerns, and help guide you through the process.
From there, we’ll gather a full set of diagnostic records, including:
- Digital photos
- X-rays
These records allow me to evaluate not just your teeth, but your bite, jaw alignment, and overall facial structure. Orthodontics is about much more than straight teeth—it’s about balance, function, and long-term health. If you’re curious about this broader approach, you might also enjoy An Airway-Focused Approach to Orthodontic Treatment Matters.
Once I’ve reviewed your records, I’ll meet with you personally to:
- Explain what I’m seeing
- Clarify your goals
- Walk you through a customized treatment plan
We’ll talk through your options—whether that’s braces, aligners, or a more specialized approach. For more on that decision, see Braces vs Invisalign: Which Treatment Fits Your Lifestyle? and Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?
After that conversation, our treatment coordinator will go over:
- Insurance and financial details
- Payment options
- Scheduling
And yes—in many cases, we can even start treatment the same day if that’s something you’d like to plan for in advance.
How Often Are Appointments?
This is one of the most frequent questions we get.
For most patients, appointments are typically scheduled about every 8 weeks. That said, orthodontic care isn’t one-size-fits-all, and timing can vary depending on your specific treatment.
Here are a few examples:
- Traditional braces (self-ligating): We use advanced self-ligating braces with high-quality archwires that stay active for longer periods. This allows us to move teeth efficiently without frequent adjustments, which means fewer visits for you.
- Clear aligners (like Invisalign or Angel Aligner): These patients can often go longer between visits, since much of the work happens through a series of pre-programmed aligners.
- Expanders or early treatment appliances: In the early stages—especially for younger patients—visits may be closer together to monitor growth and make timely adjustments.
If you’re exploring early treatment, check out Timing Jaw Growth & Orthodontic Treatment and Orthodontic Expanders and Expansion: A Comprehensive Guide.
The bottom line: we tailor your appointment schedule to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to your life.
What Happens at Regular Visits?
Most adjustment appointments are quick, efficient, and purposeful.
Depending on where you are in treatment, we may:
- Change or adjust wires
- Check tooth movement progress
- Deliver new aligners
- Make small refinements to keep things on track
Because of the technology we use, these visits are typically smooth and predictable. Many of our patients are in and out quickly, which makes it easier to fit orthodontic care into a busy Austin schedule.
If you’re looking to make the most of your time in the area, I’ve even put together some ideas in Making the Most of Your Trip to the Orthodontist.
Will I Need Extractions or Other Procedures?
This is a big question—and an important one.
In general, I take a conservative approach when it comes to removing permanent teeth. My preference is to:
- Use expansion when appropriate
- Apply specialized orthodontic biomechanics to create space
That said, there are limits to what we can safely and predictably achieve without extractions. In certain cases, removing teeth may provide the best long-term outcome.
If you’re on the fence, I’ll walk you through:
- The pros and cons of each option
- The impact on facial balance and long-term stability
- What to expect either way
Ultimately, we make that decision together.
You may also need other procedures during treatment, such as:
- Interproximal reduction (IPR) – explained in Understanding Interproximal Reduction (IPR) in Orthodontics
- Wisdom tooth considerations – see Understanding Wisdom Teeth and Orthodontic Treatment
Every plan is fully customized, and we’ll guide you through each step.
What About Jaw Surgery?
In some cases, orthodontics alone isn’t enough to fully correct bite or jaw discrepancies. When the upper and lower jaws are significantly out of proportion, orthognathic (jaw) surgery may be part of the ideal treatment plan.
If that’s the case, the next step would be:
- A consultation with an oral surgeon
- Coordinated planning between our office and the surgeon
- A clear roadmap before any treatment begins
I know surgery can sound intimidating, but when it’s needed, it can be life-changing—not just for appearance, but for function and long-term health.
A Process Built Around You
One of the most important things to understand is that there is no “standard” orthodontic plan.
Every patient is different:
- Different goals
- Different anatomy
- Different timelines
That’s why everything we do—from your first consultation to your final retainer (learn more in Orthodontic Retainers: Essential Guide)—is tailored specifically to you.
We’ll guide you through:
- Your options
- The pros and cons
- The timeline
- The financial considerations
And we’ll make sure you feel confident every step of the way.
Final Thoughts
Orthodontic treatment doesn’t have to feel overwhelming—especially when you know what to expect.
At Rise + Smile Orthodontics, we’ve built our process to be:
- Efficient – fewer visits when possible
- Personalized – custom treatment plans
- Transparent – clear communication at every step
If you’ve been putting off orthodontic care because you weren’t sure what the process looks like, I hope this gives you some clarity—and confidence to take the next step.
